Actress Angelina Jolie's 'Maleficent' Shoots in June; Elle Fanning to Play Sleeping Beauty

Actress Angelina Jolie has long been associated with Maleficent, Disney's live-action rejiggering of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, and now it looks like production will get underway this summer.  You can see why the studio has been so keen to make the film after 2010's Alice in Wonderland gave the big-budget treatment to a familiar fantasy story and earned a billion dollars globally, and the new fairy tale project is ready to go, as Jolie's committed to make it her next film.

Not only is the actress currently set to work on Maleficent in just a few short months, but the project seems to have found its sleeping beauty in Elle Fanning.

Basically, the idea here is that the film tells the familiar story from the perspective of the villain.  With Jolie set to play the eponymous sorceress, THR reports that Fanning is in talks to play the sleeping beauty, who here is referred to as Aurora.

Fanning, the younger sibling of Dakota Fanning, has seen her profile rise exponentially over the last two years.  She received accolades for her work in Sofia Coppola's Somewhere before heading into last year's Super 8 and We Bought a Zoo, as well as Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's scoop, pre-production on Maleficent is currently underway in the United Kingdom with principal photography scheduled to begin in June.  Linda Woolverton, the Lion King screenwriter whose last script was not coincidentally Alice in Wonderland, wrote the screenplay.  Disney was so eager to repeat the success of that 3D adventure that the studio spent some time courting Tim Burton to direct, but that didn't pan out.

Instead, Maleficent will be the directorial debut of Robert Strumberg.  A longtime veteran of visual effects, Stromberg served as production designer on Alice and Wonderland, as well as James Cameron's Avatar.  More recently, he contributed to Oz: The Great and Powerful, Disney's The Wizard of Oz prequel directed by Sam Raimi and starring James Franco as a magician turned wizard.
